QUESTIONS
How can I ensure that I have the correct ssh installation?
Can I use another ssh?
What if ssh can't connect?
What can I do when connecting through ssh does not work?
LINKS Open CMD
On Mac OS/Linux: Everything is already installed.
On Windows ( Windows 10, Versions before Feb 2020 ):
CMD
Open a CMD window.
Version Check
Enter this to check the version of your ssh installation:
ssh-V
The result should be something like this: OpenSSH_8.5p1, OpenSSL 1.1.1k 25 Mar 2021
It should match OpenSSH_{X}.yyy where the {X} is equal or higher than 8.
If the SSH command is missing it would display the following:
'ssh' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
If it is existing and higher or equals 8, than everything is correctly installed and ready.
You can end here and don't need to read to rest.
Install
If you are missing the software or your version is lower, you need to install the correct one.
The easiest way to install ssh is by installing GIT, since this includes the correct version.
If GIT is not installed, it can be downloaded here.
Set Path
In case the GIT installation is used, the SSH command can't be used in the short way.
Instead it needs to be added to the path in a CMD window first, so that it is usable in the following commands.
This needs to be done every time a new CMD is opened.
(You could alternatively also use the full absolute path to GIT's ssh).
Adding GIT's ssh to a CMD:
Replace the path by your installation path of GIT's subfolder usr/binsetPATH="{path/to/git}/usr/bin"
Filled out, assuming a standard git installation on drive c:
setPATH="C:/Program Files/Git/usr/bin/"
Test it afterwards with a version check of ssh:
ssh-V APP | VERSION Windows, Mac OS, Linux
